Until recently years Uzbekistan was a notoriously difficult place to visit. Now however, its incredibly easy as if you have a British citizen passport, you can enter Uzbekistan as a visitor for stays of up to 30 days without a visa (See travel advice here). With the popularity of cities like Khiva & Bukhara, you may wonder id Samarkand is worth visiting.
Samarkand is considered the jewel of the Silk Road and a city steeped in history and culture. Lets explore some of the things you can do in Samarkand. We’ll start with one of the must-visit attractions in Samarkand, which is the legendary Registon Square. This iconic square is surrounded by stunning architectural masterpieces that date back centuries.

Getting to Registon Square:
Registon Square
is located in the heart of Samarkand, making it easily accessible from most parts of the city. You can reach Samarkand by air via the Samarkand International Airport or by train from various cities within Uzbekistan. If your adventurous like us, you might find yourself travelling through the mountainous roads in Tajikistan from Dushanbe. If so, check out our guide here! From the city centre of Samarkand, you can take a taxi or walk to Registon Square, which is conveniently located near most accommodations.
Historical Significance:
Registon Square, also known as Registan Square, has been the centre of Samarkand since ancient times. It was a commercial hub and a bustling marketplace during the Silk Road era. Today, the square is dominated by three magnificent madrasahs (Islamic educational institutions) that showcase the exquisite Islamic architecture of the Timurid dynasty.
Explore the Madrasahs:
The three madrasahs that adorn the area are the Ulugh Beg Madrasah, the Tilya-Kori Madrasah, and the Sher-Dor Madrasah. Each madrasah has its unique characteristics and intricate details, making them a photographer’s dream. Take your time to explore the intricate tile work, domes, minarets, and ornate portals of these architectural marvels.

Ticket Information and Local Markets
To visit, you will need to purchase an entrance ticket. As of October 2022 when we visited, the ticket price for foreigners was around 50,000 Uzbek som (subject to change). It is advisable to carry local currency in cash, as I don’t remember card being accepted.

Visit at Golden Hour: The soft, warm light during the golden hour, which occurs during sunrise or sunset, will enhance the beauty of the madrasahs. Plan your visit accordingly to capture stunning shots with a magical ambiance.
Varied Perspectives: Experiment with different angles and perspectives to capture the grandeur of the madrasahs. Get close to capture intricate details or step back to include the entire structure in the frame. Don’t forget to look up and photograph the stunning domes against the sky. Its also important to get as low as you can using a wide angle lens to make the structure appear even more dominating.
Reflections: Registon Square features a large open courtyard. After rainfall, the courtyard may gather shallow puddles, creating beautiful reflections. Utilise these reflections to add an artistic touch to your photographs. It was blissfully hot whilst we visited so this wasn’t an option for us, but you may get lucky (or unlucky depending how you view it)
Night Photography: The area is beautifully illuminated after dark, creating a magical atmosphere. Capture the mesmerising lights and take long-exposure shots to emphasise the architectural details. You’ll also be able to stand at the gate and get photos without any tourists which makes it very worthwhile.
People and Culture: Samarkand attracts locals and tourists alike. Include people in your photographs to capture the vibrant atmosphere and showcase the local culture. Be respectful and seek permission when photographing individuals up close. I was able to capture this incredible picture of an Uzbek girl in full dress (with her permission).

Siab Bazaar: Situated a short distance from Registon Square, Siab Bazaar is a bustling market where you can find a variety of goods, including fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, handmade crafts, and traditional Uzbek textiles. Stroll through the vibrant stalls, interact with local vendors, and perhaps find some souvenirs to take home.
Samarkand Market: Located in the heart of the city, Samarkand Market is a treasure trove of local products. Here, you can find everything from traditional ceramics and jewellery to intricately woven carpets and silk fabrics. Take your time to explore the market, admire the craftsmanship, and engage in friendly bargaining to secure unique items.

Platan Restaurant – without a doubt!
When it comes to gastronomic adventures in Samarkand, Platan Restaurant stands out as a culinary gem, offering a delightful blend of traditional Uzbek cuisine and a charming, contemporary dining experience. Nestled in the heart of this historic city, Platan has earned a reputation as one of the best restaurants in Samarkand, and for good reason. It’s a fair walk from Registon square (about 33 minutes) so you may want to jump in an incredibly cheap taxi instead!
The Ambiance: As you step into Platan, you’ll be greeted by an ambiance that seamlessly fuses the elegance of a fine dining establishment with the warm hospitality characteristic of Uzbek culture. The interior boasts tasteful decor, featuring traditional elements that transport you into the heart of Samarkand’s rich heritage.
Culinary Excellence: The heart and soul of Platan lies in its menu, a gastronomic journey that pays homage to the finest Uzbek cuisine. The restaurant’s chefs are maestros in their craft, artfully preparing dishes that capture the essence of Uzbek flavors. From succulent kebabs to flavorful plov (Uzbek pilaf) and an array of delectable manti (dumplings), every bite is a celebration of local culinary traditions.

Among them, the “Lyulya Kebab” is a standout, featuring juicy minced meat infused with aromatic spices and expertly grilled to perfection. The “Manti” are another highlight, plump dumplings filled with a savory blend of meat and spices, garnished with a dollop of cool yogurt. You could instead be like me and order the amazing chicken nuggets (By this point of my Central Asian trip I was ready for some homely food)
