1. Visit the Bardo Museum in Tunis: This museum is home to the world’s largest collection of Roman mosaics, as well as many other artefacts from Tunisia’s rich history.
2. Exploring the ancient city of Carthage: Located just outside of Tunis has always been one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tunisia. This ancient city was once a major power in the Mediterranean and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
3. Take a stroll through the Medina of Tunis: This historic district is full of narrow streets and traditional architecture, and is a great place to pick up souvenirs. Medinas have always had a strong allure, maybe it’s the constant array of ornaments you’ve never wanted or the non-stop hassle to buy, but nevertheless, the medinas around the country still remain as some of the most popular tourist attractions in Tunisia.
4. Relax on the beaches of Hammamet: This coastal town is known for its beautiful beaches and clear waters, and is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. There’s always amazing deals to Hammamet and due to its proximity to the airport its a good choice if you need a holiday without too much traveling. Safety-wise, there’s been no problems for a long time and when we visited in May 2023, we felt very safe.
5. Visit the Star Wars sets near Matmata: Tunisia was used as a filming location for several Star Wars movies, and you can visit some of the iconic sets in and around the town of Matmata. I was promised cous-cous served by Darth Vader on my trip to Mos Espa (this would of been one of best tourist attractions in Tunisia… if it was true) however he wasn’t there on the day I visited. Judging from the incredible lack of Star Wars merchandise in the area, I’m guessing this was a lie. It seems they haven’t fully monetised the area yet, but I’m not complaining. We were able to explore the area with very few tourists around.
6. Take a desert safari in the Sahara: Explore the stunning desert landscape of Tunisia on a guided tour, and spend a night under the stars in a traditional Bedouin camp. This is an especially good idea if you happen to get a dodgy week of weather as we did. Hammamet was predicted to get a soaking from a huge rain storm battering Europe in May, so we opted to head down to the Sahara, where it was a balmy 36° and clear skis!
7. Sample local cuisine: Tunisia is known for its delicious food, including couscous, brik, and harissa. Be sure to try some of the local specialties while you’re here.
8. Visit the Amphitheater of El Djem: This Roman amphitheatre is one of the best-preserved in the world and is another UNESCO World Heritage site. I haven’t visited Rome yet (Europe has so many incredible place to spend a weekend) but I can’t imagine the Colosseum being much better than El Djem. It’s sheer size (slightly smaller than Rome) was impressive but also the fact its been well preserved and EMPTY… We literally had the place to ourselves.
9. Take a dip in the hot springs of Korbous: These natural hot springs are believed to have healing properties and are a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Hot springs is something I make a bee-line for whenever I travel and although hot springs aren’t one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tunisia, they are definitely worth a visit.
10. Explore the traditional village of Sidi Bou Said: This picturesque village is known for its blue and white buildings and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Top tourist attractions in Tunisia When it Rains:
1. Visit the Bardo Museum in Tunis (again?): Although a popular tourist attractions in Tunisia, I’d definitely save this museum as it is a great way to spend a rainy day and learn more about Tunisia’s history and culture.
2. Take a cooking class: Whilst I’m still waiting for couscous cooking lessons with Darth Vader, there’s still a great opportunity to learn how to prepare traditional Tunisian dishes like (normal) couscous and brik from a local chef.
3. Attend a concert or performance at the Théâtre Municipal de Tunis or other cultural venues in the city. We didn’t get to do this, but there seems to be a very interesting variety of concerts and local music available to see.
4. Relax in a hammam: A traditional Tunisian hammam is a great way to unwind and stay dry on a rainy day.
5. Take a pottery class: Many pottery studios in Tunisia offer classes where you can learn to make your own traditional ceramics.
6. Visit the Dar Hussein Palace in Sousse: This historic palace is now a museum and is a great place to learn more about Tunisia’s history and art.
